Tubal Ligation Q&A
Tubal ligation is a form of permanent birth control in which the fallopian tubes are surgically removed. This is done laparoscopically and is also called bilateral salpingectomy.
This is for patients who are 100% sure they do not want future childbearing and either cannot tolerate or do not want other forms of birth control.
Removing the fallopian tubes also helps reduce the risk of ovarian cancer later in life, as ovarian cancer sometimes originates from the fallopian tubes. It is done minimally invasively, with small 1 cm incisions on the abdomen.
It is an outpatient procedure and typically patients go home the same day.
