Basic Infertility

If you have difficulty getting pregnant, you’re not alone. Nearly 10% of American women have trouble getting or staying pregnant after one year of trying. If you were diagnosed with basic infertility and are overwhelmed with questions, the knowledgeable providers at Arbor are ready to answer them and provide a variety of treatment options.

There are many reasons why a woman cannot become or remain pregnant. Common causes include:

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)
  • Physical defects in the uterus
  • Blocked fallopian tubes
  • Uterine fibroids

If you are wondering if you have basic infertility, there are several tests that we perform to determine if you are infertile and what’s causing your infertility. A regular gynecological exam can test for some forms of infertility, but you may need an ovulation test to determine whether or not you’re ovulating. Your doctor might also recommend a test called a hysterosalpingography, which involves the use of an X-ray to search for blockages in your fallopian tubes.

Other types of hormone testing are used to monitor the reproductive hormones produced by your pituitary gland. If the issue is structural, your gynecologist might recommend an ultrasound to view the details of your uterus.

If you are told that you’re infertile, don’t lose hope. There are treatment options that help many women conceive when they otherwise couldn’t. Available treatments include:

  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
  • Fertility drugs
  • Surgery
  • Assisted reproductive technology

For 85-90% of women with basic infertility, simple solutions such as fertility drugs or corrective, in-office surgeries are effective enough to allow them to conceive. If neither works for you, the providers at Arbor OBGYN can help you explore and choose a more advanced treatment such as IVF. Your doctor can help you find the best course of treatment that can achieve the pregnancy you longed for.

If you’re having trouble conceiving, you may have basic infertility. To explore your treatment options, call or schedule an appointment online with the trusted team at Arbor Obstetrics & Gynecology today.
