Contraception and IUDs

What kind of birth control do you need?

There are many forms of contraception on the market today, each with unique benefits and drawbacks. If you’re looking for a long-term birth control solution, an intrauterine device (IUD) might be right for you. The knowledgeable providers can help you select the most effective birth control method for your lifestyle.

More about IUDs

An IUD is a very small, flexible, T-shaped device that your gynecologist places in your uterus to prevent pregnancy. The IUD is 99% effective and offers years of continuous protection, depending on which IUD is chosen. When you no longer want to prevent pregnancy, the procedure is completely reversible by removing the IUD.

You may be apprehensive about the IUD placement, but it doesn’t hurt. Following a comprehensive pelvic exam, your gynecologist uses a speculum to open your vagina, she then cleanses the area and goes through your cervix with a special inserter to position the IUD in your uterus. Most women say they only feel a slight tugging or minor pinching. You may also have mild cramps or spotting afterward, which typically go away within a day or two.

Benefits

One of the biggest benefits of an IUD is that it offers superior protection and is more than 99% effective, meaning your chances of getting pregnant while on it are extremely slim. Other benefits include doesn't interfere with intercourse, can help regulate your menstrual cycle, doesn't require you to remember to take a pill or use a patch, it is completely reversible, it is a safe form of contraception if other methods are not appropriate due to health conditions, and some IUDs even minimize your risk for cervical cancer.

Mirena®

Mirena® is a hormone-based IUD that uses the hormone levonorgestrel to block your pregnancy. Like all IUDs, it’s 99% effective. Placement takes only about 15 minutes and does not require surgery, incisions, or any downtime. Mirena is a popular choice because it works for up to eight years and is reversible at any time.

Paragard®

If you prefer a hormone-free IUD, Paragard® uses a thin layer of copper to prevent pregnancy. It also has a 99% success rate even without hormone-related side effects and lasts for up to 10 years. It can easily be removed if you wish to become pregnant.
